Beware the Wild
by Nathalie C. Parker
One my last goodreads is the compelling story of Beware the Wild and here is what you need to know about the first book of Nathalie C. Parker. It's a debut novel which made me want to read another one from her. She's talented and brings an original universe made of darkness, secrets and love, all kind of love.
"It's an oppressively hot and sticky morning in June when Sterling and her brother, Phin, have an argument that compels him to run into the town swamp -- the one that strikes fear in all the residents of Sticks, Louisiana. Phin doesn't return. Instead, a girl named Lenora May climbs out, and now Sterling is the only person in Sticks who remembers her brother ever existed.
Sterling needs to figure out what the swamp's done with her beloved brother and how Lenora May is connected to his disappearance -- and loner boy Heath Durham might be the only one who can help her.
This debut novel is full of atmosphere, twists and turns, and a swoon-worthy romance."
Beware the Wild is the story of Sterling, a 17 year old girl who, after a fight with him, sees her big brother Phin disapear into the Swamp. It could have been just as awful as this but the unexpecting is yet to come. Because instead of Phin, it's a girl named Lenora May who comes out. And just like that, everybody forgets about Phin to only remember Lenora May as Sterling big sister. Everone ? No, Sterling who saw everything still remembers her brother and she is the only one. Why ? And how is it possible to forget the entire life of someone ? While she's trying to stay sane, Sterling quickly understands that the local mystery is guilty. The Swamp took is brother and she's willing to do anything to get him back. Even if it means going to search for him where everything shines around darkness... Because the Swamp is full of horror stories and no one wants to approach it, she's surprised to find someone who believes her. With Heath by her side now, she's stronger and about to uncover the truth.
As the story grew darker, I got to like more and more this novel. I have to admit, at first I just liked the plot because I'm not used to read this mixture of mystery and paranormal. It was so unique and so intriguing ! And as soon as I got to know Sterling and her past, I couldn't stop turning the pages. I was slowly falling for this book ! The main character was moving and her fight for the truth was compelling.
I enjoyed reading this book because, though it's fiction and I'm not easily impressionnable, I found everything was kind of believable. And maybe that's why Beware the Wild can sound creepy. In this small town, the atmosphere is made of secrets and mystery and everyone keeps burrying it. The Swamp is the place where your nightmares go and stay for your sake. But the way Sterling faces it is, to me, realistic and brave. I couldn't see a single weakness in the plot but wasn't as scared as I thought I would be. Maybe it's because I'm French, I don't know.
What I also enjoyed was Heath ! I love when a story involves this kind of book boyfriend. He is sweet, sensitive and lost but strong too. I think he is as important as Sterling is. Because he helps her and cares deeply for her, Sterling can rely on him to find his brother. There is chemistry between the two of them and it's perfect for the YA genre. Trust me, you will love them ! Especially because it's doesn't come first in the story line.
To finish, I hope you're going to buy a copy of Beware the Wild. Reading this book was like a journey through a dark fairytale and the end was amazing. I think that for a first book, it was really good !
Thank you and enjoy your reading !
